About

Hi, I’m Lisa.

I’m half-Swedish, half-Filipina, and grew up following my economist dad’s year-long projects – we lived in Sweden, the Philippines, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia and Spain. As a teenager I chose the UK, finishing high school in London and studying philosophy at Warwick.

I worked in admin and studied journalism, went backpacking in South America and slept on my parents’ sofa in Serbia, but always came back to London. Now, I’m ten years into a career as an editor and married to a Yorkshireman.

Why Rebellious Tourist? Well, I am a tourist. I’m not a professional traveller, I’m not a ‘nomad’ or a ‘vagabond’. Like most people, I get a few weeks off work each year. That doesn’t mean I want to spend them at the same resort on the same beach, Instagramming my flip flops. I research, plan, budget, book and fly as far as possible, to see as much of the world as I can.

I’d love to inspire people to travel more, but I also want to be honest – travelling can be annoying, exhausting and expensive. Travelling quickly is a trade-off – I know I’m missing a lot along the way. But it doesn’t have to be a multi-year round-the-world trip that changes your life (and you don’t have to pretend other tourists aren’t annoying).

This blog is still new and I’m including a lot of old posts from South America, in case they’re still useful, but I’m planning to add a lot more trip info, itineraries, budgets, packing lists, and future travel plans.
